Bindy is the female I chose to keep from Allie's one and only litter as the future for CynTech Boxers. My decision was not an easy one as I could of easily kept Bindy's litter sister,
Can. Ch. CynTech Shadigee Dash Of Class (Tia), who is loved and owned by Mary Jane & Lee Nowak of Shadigee Boxers.
In late summer, early fall of 2007 Bindy Sue became quite ill losing 7 lbs. in 36 days. During a long, tedious process of elimination, my vet, Dr. Lisa Lomsnes, suspected that Bindy had a condition called
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and this diagnosis was confirmed from biopsies taken during a spay/exploratory surgery as well as from biopsies taken in an emergency surgery a few days after the
initial surgery in early 2008. We had to wait until Bindy Sue had gained back most of the weight she had lost before doing the surgery. The only way to diagnose IBD is to take biopsies from the GI tract by endoscopy or by exploratory surgery. I needed to spay Bindy Sue so I decided that
doing exploratory surgery at the same time would be the best way to go at that time. IBD is different for each individual dog and can vary in severity from mild, to moderate, to severe and can be fatal. IBD cannot be cured and the ideal way to control this disease is with diet (usually a veterinary
prescription formula) but medication may also be necessary depending on the dog. In August 2008, just a few days shy of her 5th birthday, Bindy Sue developed a severe complication that caused severe anemia which in turn lead to a very low Red Blood Cell (RBC) count and her bone
marrow was not reproducing new RBCs. Initial diagnosis based on bloodwork was cancer, either Leukemia or Lymphoma, but since I had been through cancer with her dam, it did not "feel" like cancer to me. I ended up taking Bindy to get an ultrasound done by internal medicine specialist,
Dr. Sheri Clarkson, and a consultation with oncologist, Dr. Neal Mauldin, at the Western Veterinary Specialist & Emergency Centre in Calgary, Alberta. I was happy to hear that there was no tumors found in the ultrasound or any other
abnormalities. Dr. Mauldin suspected that there was a small bleed in Bindy Sue's GI tract and suggested two different routes to go, one being surgical (too costly for me) and the other using medications. I opted for using medications and that is where Dr. Clarkson came in. Dr. Sheri Clarkson
has been what a I like to call a "miracle worker" in helping Bindy Sue recover from her near fatal complication which was a small bleeding ulcer, based on how her body responded to the specific medications given, somewhere in her GI tract! She is the one my vet, Dr. Lisa, turns to when we
have any questions in regards to treating Bindy Sue's IBD/complication and as Dr. Lisa says, "She has never steered me wrong in all the cases I have consulted with her on!" I can't thank my own vet, Dr. Lisa Lomsnes, Dr. Neal Mauldin and Dr. Sheri Clarkson (who is now at
Fish Creek 24 Hour Pet Hospital & Emergency Services) enough for the care and determination to help get this complication under control so that Bindy Sue could continue to live a relatively normal life for whatever time we have together.
With the complication taken care of, Bindy Sue's IBD is currently under control feeding her a completely raw diet and having medication on hand in case of a flare up which does happen from time to time. Bindy Sue is currently at the highest weight she have ever been and I don't care if she
has an extra pound or two as I know how fast she can drop the weight during a complication or flare. I am hopeful that she will remain healthy with minimal flare ups and hopefully no further complications for the rest of her life! My goal is to see my "love bug" or "pumpkin" or "Princess Bindy"
as I affectionately call her, reach 10 years of age but for now I will treasure each day we have together :-) I have added some very informative links for IBD to my Links page under "Health Related Articles" if you want to read more about this condition.
Bindy lives up to the registered name I have given her as on any given day almost the entire content of toys in the toy bucket are scattered about the lower and upper floors of my house thus giving the appearance
of a "tornado" having gone through! Her call name doesn't exactly go with her registered name but I happened to be watching a rerun of the Oprah show whose guests happened to be Steve Irwin, his wife Terri and their daughter, Bindi Sue, from
"The Crocodile Hunter" (one of my favorite shows to watch). When I saw his daughter Bindi, who was 4 years old at the time the show was taped, I thought that she was the most adorable child I had ever seen. So when I decided to give my puppies names, I felt that flashy female #2 was
just as adorable as Bindi Irwin so I decided to name her Bindy (with a change to the end letter) and it seems to suit her very well :-)
Bindy's sire is the stunning, stallion of a dog, Am/Can. MBIS Ch. Summer's Dash Riprock SOM (Dash), who was sadly taken from the
Boxer world much too soon. I am very proud to be able to say that Bindy and her five littermates are a result from Dash's last naturally sired Canadian litter. I want to thank Josie and Tom O'Reilly of Summer Boxers (Reg'd) for allowing me
to breed my Ally McBeal to Dash Riprock. The future looks very promising for Bindy and her littermates.
In 2004, Bindy accumulated 8 points towards her Canadian Championship breeder/owner handled. She also had some very memorable wins that include a second place win, in a large entry of puppies, at the
Alberta Kennel Club Breeder Sweepstakes (all breeds) under judge Avis Mackie on July 30, 2004, as well as a Reserve Winners Bitch (to a 5 point win) at the Alberta Boxer Club 10th
Anniversary Specialty Show under Boxer breeder judge Cheryl Robbins on July 31, 2004, breeder/owner handled!
Bindy completed her Canadian Championship by winning Winners Bitch and Best Of Winners from the Bred By class (breeder/owner handled) for 5 points under judge Patricia Gellerman, at the
Alberta Kennel Club show on February 4, 2005! Bindy is the 4th Canadian Champion for her dam, Can. Ch. CynTech's Ally McBeal (Can. Ch. Berlane's Corporate Image SOM X Malimi's New Debut For
CynTech CD, ASCA CD DOM), making Allie a Canadian Dam of Merit and is the 11th Canadian Champion for her sire, Am/Can. MBIS Ch. Summer's Dash Riprock
SOM (Am. Ch. Maxl's Golden Boy SOM X Can. Ch. Berlane's Wild Thing Stella CD DOM).
